A Partner Story – Recovery is Happening

At United Way of Dodge County, we believe in the power of partnership. It’s through these partnerships that we can make lasting changes in our community, helping those who are struggling to find the strength and resources they need to improve their lives. One such partner is Recovery is Happening, a nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering a supportive environment for individuals working towards recovery from addiction.

We want to share a story illustrating the significant impact of our combined efforts. A story that embodies the very essence of why we do what we do.

Meet Janet*. In her 30s and a mother of three, Janet found herself in the clutches of substance use disorder and homelessness. With an active child protection case to her name, she knew she needed help but didn’t know where to turn.

That’s when United Way and Recovery is Happening stepped in. We were able to help Janet into detox, enroll her in an outpatient treatment program and secure a spot for her in a sober living community. Through the Strong Start Housing grant, we took care of her rent, allowing her to focus on recovery rather than worrying about employment or where she would sleep each night.

In just a short time, Janet made significant progress. She was reunited with her children during supervised visits and was able to balance her new responsibilities without the pressure of a job. Given her remarkable strides, we extended her rental assistance to six months.

And Janet didn’t stop there. She successfully completed the outpatient treatment program and managed to secure employment. Today, Janet lives in her own apartment, supports herself and her children, and is nearing her first anniversary of sobriety.

This story is a testament to the potential that lies within every individual struggling with addiction. It underscores the importance of extending a helping hand to those in need and the power of collaborative community efforts in making a difference.

At United Way of Dodge County, we’re committed to helping individuals like Janet create new beginnings. Our partnership with Recovery is Happening is just one way we’re striving to build a community where everyone has a chance to succeed, regardless of their past struggles.

We are incredibly proud of Janet and everyone like her who has the courage to change their lives. We hope their stories inspire others to seek help and remind us all of the importance of supporting initiatives that assist those struggling with addiction.

In our community, recovery isn’t just possible—it’s happening.
